Wika Arafin, 49, Hairdressing and Salon Management
After growing up around a salon in Indonesia, Wika Arafin now has her eyes on owning her own hair salon. We sat down with Wika to chat about her course, where her passion for hair came from and her time in the industry so far.
What made you decide to pursue your passion in this industry?
When I was a teenager, I helped my uncle in the salon back in Indonesia. I loved it and wanted to keep working in hair. But when I came here to Australia when I was 22 I had stop. I have a 23 year old daughter and a 16 year old son. My daughter actually studied Make-up and Beauty here [at the College]. I hadn’t been doing anything for 2 years [before studying at TACB] and was working in a factory, as a cleaner – whatever I could find.
Where are you now in your career? What dreams or plans do you have for the future?
I really want to work in barbering. I would love to open my own business eventually but for now I’d love to just get more experience in a salon, building up my skills and confidence.
What were your most memorable experiences during your time at the College?
I loved being a part of the Pacific Runway fashion show. It was full on and very busy, but a great learning experience. The Spring Carnival show, which was run by the College was also great as I was really pushed to be as creative as I could. And, of course, all of the Raffles photoshoots have provided me with a good grounding in working with photographers and fashion. All of it has helped me in building confidence.
What advice would you give to anyone looking at pursuing a career in the industry?
I would say: be positive! Be friendly and work hard. You can go so many places with hairdressing if you push yourself and put yourself out there for people to see.
What advice would you give potential students thinking of studying at the Australasian College Broadway?
Be active and take up every opportunity! Do the work experience – it’s one of the best parts about being a TACB student! I’ve made so many wonderful friends here at the College by getting involved in the student community and any event the College holds.
Wika is currently studying at The Australasian College Broadway (RTO Code: 6980) and completing both her Certificate III in Hairdressing (SIH30111) and a Diploma of Salon Management (SIB50210).
