Returning to study as a mature age student can be quite a shock to the system, especially when juggling it with a full time job! But there are definitely some lessons I have learnt which have helped me stay focused and my eyes on the prize throughout my last 18 months at TACB!
You are guaranteed to make great new friends at college and some of these friends will also be your biggest supporters. I personally found a great friend and we kept each other motivated throughout the course and pushed each other to be the best we could be. Sometimes it is easy to slack off and life gets busy but having a study buddy definitely helped me stay on track.
The serious side of makeup is the business and marketing modules, which will equip you with the knowledge of operating a business and how to market yourself as an artist. While it can be easy to get distracted and you want to catch up with your friends, paying attention and getting as much work done as you can while you’re in class will definitely pay off. While homework is unavoidable, the more work you can do in class means the less you have to do at home. It also gives you the opportunity to ask your educators questions and learn new things based on their experiences which could be very valuable to you later!
MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY EXPERIENCE
Through the college I got the chance to take part in some awesome work experience opportunities which give you industry experience while you study. As a student at the Australasian College Broadway, I would definitely recommend joining the TACB Student Community Facebook group and look out for these work placement positions and sign up if they are of interest to you. These are experiences that money can’t buy and will help you while you are studying. They will give you more practice and put your new found skills and knowledge into action!
Stay inspired while you study by following your favourite artists on social media. Instagram is a great platform to discover talent and trends around the world and Pinterest is a great way of saving looks that you can try later! Don’t compare yourself to these artists though. Some have been in the industry for 10+ years! You should, however, look up to them; be inspired and learn techniques from them which you could apply in your work.
Studying isn’t all work and no play! You are learning skills so you can become part of one of the most creative industries in the world. Set yourself goals to keep motivated and reward yourself at milestones throughout the course. Then at the end get together with your classmates and celebrate your success, you’ve deserved it!
