How I Came To Study Make-up Artistry

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

– Thomas Merton

For as long as I can recall I have always had a passion for all forms of artistic expression. Be it painting, dancing, writing, or music – from a young age I was drawn to anything that allowed me to express myself in ways that words would limit. Art encourages you to see the world around you with open eyes and, with that, I find myself constantly inspired.

There was no question for me when it came to deciding what I wanted to pursue once finishing school. I knew I needed to chase something that would allow me to nurture my creativity in an industry that excites me and in which I could thrive. That is how I found myself studying makeup artistry.

Since commencing my CUF50407 Diploma of Specialist Makeup Services in November 2015, the time has truly flown by! I am now almost halfway through my course.

I credit this to studying something that I genuinely have a love and passion for, as well as being fortunate enough to do so with a group of talented and inspiring individuals that continuously support and encourage each other. In a short matter of months these people have gone from being complete strangers to close friends.

Since leaving school, the concept of studying has developed a new definition for me. Each day I wake up genuinely looking forward to the day ahead, knowing that I will have the opportunity to stimulate and challenge myself both mentally and creatively. With every class being so hands on and engaging, no two days are ever the same. Every day I am learning something new and there is nothing that exceeds the feeling of excitement and satisfaction that comes from walking away from a class knowing that you are now capable of something that you weren’t able to do yesterday.

The educators and influencers that I have been fortunate enough to be mentored by, in my short time studying, are truly experts within their industry. They possess such extensive knowledge, expertise, and talent and I find myself constantly enlightened and inspired. They are patient, supportive and encouraging, and will go above and beyond to help bridge the gap between you and your goals.

Once I complete my diploma, I hope to one day work within the fashion industry. Being able to display my passion across runways and editorials, while evoking an emotional response from those who view it, is something that has always excited me. Being a very business oriented person, I have always possessed an entrepreneurial urge to establish a name for myself within the industry and one day, ideally, work for myself.

Since commencing studying, I have been presented with unlimited opportunities which have allowed me to gain industry experience, networking and a following in my work, combined with the new found confidence that has come from seeing myself grow as an artist each day. I don’t doubt for a moment that I have made the right decision and I am beyond excited to enter the industry and see where it will take me.

My advice to anyone who may be unsure of what career path it is that they should be following is this:

Take some time to really get to know yourself and find out what it is that enlightens and inspires you each day – and then invest in it. Follow your passion and you will be sure to find your purpose
